With its glossy, deep green crown of stiff, feather-like fronds, Cycas revoluta has enjoyed popularity in the nursery industry for generations. A striking ornamental native to the islands of Southern Japan, the Sago Palm as it is commonly referred to was first described in 1782. Preferring full sun and watering when dry, the Sago Palm thrives in the subtropical zones of Southern California. Our stock is well accustomed to the heat of the Inland Empire, and we maintain a collection of sizes from 5 gallon to larger in-the-ground specimens.
C. revoluta is incredibly resilient; being able to tolerate indoor placement, neglect, extended periods of being potted, and moderate to heavy frosts. Beyond its value as a specimen, the cycad has been processed into the edible sago starch. This is not to say that the Sago Palm is generally edible, as without processing the entire plant (and especially the seeds) are toxic if consumed by people or pets. The Sago Palm has been traditionally cultivated by Japanese bonsai artists, sculpting unique slow-growing miniatures.
