Known as the Palma de la Virgen, this prehistoric cycad has a gentler appearance due to its lack of marginal spines. Originating from the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in northeastern Mexico, Dioon edule is suited for both heat and mild winter frosts. D. edule prefers full sun and does not like to stay wet, so proper drainage and airflow to the leaves is recommended. Its species name translates to two-egged (Dioon) edible (edule), owing to the two ovules found in the female cone and the use of its seeds in traditional local cuisine.
With mature leaves reaching 4 1/2 ft, this cycad can be displayed as a specimen, against hardscape, or as a contrast to other varieties in your garden.
