Its many thin canes are wrapped in a fibrous sheath that gives the trunks a woven texture similar to burlap. Each cane is crowned with tiny petioles that expand into a fan of deeply divided leaves. Narrower and more numerous than its cousin Rhapis excelsa the leaf segments of R. humilis taper into fine points and droop gracefully at the tips. Slow-growing and shade-loving, this palm thrives where others falter, content in the filtered light of an understory or the shelter of a patio. As it matures, new canes continually rise from the base, filling the clump into a lush, self-renewing screen. R. humilis thrives in subtropical to cool climates. The inflorescence does not develop fruit as all plants are male.
