Dioon spinulosum, commonly known as the giant dioon, is a striking cycad species endemic to evergreen forests of Mexico. A literal living fossil, this ancient plant species dates back over a hundred million years – and has remained virtually unchanged from the time of the dinosaurs. With its impressive trunk and lush foliage, the Dioon spinulosum is the prefect ornamental to add a Jurassic-tropical touch to any landscape.
Growth Rate: A very slow grower in Southern California, this plant in its native habitat takes on a palm tree appearance and can reach heights of 40 to 50 feet.
Grow Region: Dioon spinulosum thrives with regular watering in warm inland valleys and costal climates in a wide range of soils, with a preference for a neutral or slightly alkaline PH.
Madera Palms inventory includes several hundred 18- to 22-year-old Dion spinulosums in 15 and 20-gallon pots with trunks ranging from 4 to 14 inches.
